This week on Wild watches weird shows from the early 2000s that no one has heard of… MDs (2002)

Starring: John Hannah and William Fichtner

This wasn’t even a one and done. 10 episodes were shot but only 8 aired (truly tragic), so we will never know how it was supposed to end. It’s a medical show about doctors who take malicious compliance to new heights in their efforts to give their patients good medical care, against the wishes of the insurance company. Topical, for a twenty year old show.

“The Mish” (Misson General) is a San Francisco hospital staffed almost entirely with disaster bisexuals.

The highlights: Very homoerotic locker room scenes, Jane Lynch’s mere presence and John Hannah’s accent.

Characters

Dr Bruce “Killer” Kellerman - Cardiothoracic Surgeon (be still my heart) and Disaster Bi #1 (William Fichtner)

With his sexy voice and soulful eyes (and let’s face it, his ripped bod), he’s breaking hearts all over San Francisco, then fixing them right up again. Likes buying haute couture for his partners but dresses like an overgrown frat boy himself. Always up to something. Not so secretly a giant nerd who loves his job, but is a total mess outside of work. Divorcee with an adorable kid, but still working on being a good dad.

Special Skills: Performing the most difficult heart surgeries, lock-picking, fixing broken-down cars, looking sexy AF in scrubs, and not feeling any of his emotions if at all possible.

------

Dr Robert “Dr D” Dalgety - Trauma Specialist (in more ways than one) and Disaster Bi #2 - (Tumblr fave John Hannah)

A Scottish rogue with a dark (and presumably tragic) hidden past he is atoning for. Used to working in a war zone. Talented, dedicated, and willing to break the rules to save the day. Described by the hospital manager as a “loose cannon with a mysterious sexuality”, Dr D lives up to his name in the first ten seconds of screen time. Can usually be found in the nearest broom closet.

Special Skills: Plugging and patching bullet wounds, fucking, hacking computers, shouting in that adorable brogue, creating chaos wherever he goes, and suffering needlessly.

The verdict:

Dalgety and Kellerman are soulmates from the get-go, and they only get closer as the show carries on. Their dynamic is like House and Wilson, with less animosity and more fun. They’re at their best when they’re doing something illegal, and have a great ride-or-die relationship that springs (fully formed) from their chemistry the first time they meet.

Whether they’re hitch-hiking on the highway with a human heart in a cooler, or avoiding staff meetings by hiding in the showers together, they can always count on each other.

Other favorites:

Dr Maggie Yang - Intern and Cinnamon Roll (Michaela Conlin)

Adopted by Kellerman and Dalgety in the first episode, an altruist with a heart of gold. Dr Yang tries to help everyone she meets, even when they don’t want it. Despite this she’s not naïve, and takes no shit from anyone and stands up for herself.

Dr Quinn Joyner - Cardiologist and fashionista (Aunjanue Ellis)

Professional and competent, mostly plays by the rules (unless manipulated by Dr Kellerman). Beautiful and brilliant, Dr Joyner is responsible for making the tough decisions. Snappy dresser, always finding time to expand her shoe collection. Designated responsible adult and least disastrous member of the team. Ignorer of red flags.

Nurse Doctor Aileen Poole - Registered Nurse & PhD with an axe to grind - (Jane Lynch)

Responsible for killing all fun, making money and meeting quotas. Having an affair with a married man, in a weird and abstract way.

---

There are a bunch of great supporting characters as well that round out the show.

Top Takeaways:

Let’s be honest, the writing on this show is wildly variable and a lot of it has aged badly, particularly some of the workplace dynamics and sexual harassment. Characters are fridged left and right (but hey, it's a medical show).

However, the slapstick comedy and the shenanigans are top tier.

Most tragic of all is that there are only 3 fics for the whole show on AO3.
